Description:

The Public Services Librarian serves as the coordinator of all printed information services to meet the changing needs of students, faculty, staff and other constituencies. The Public Services Librarian is responsible for providing reference, circulation and periodical assistance to those who seek information. Students, faculty, and staff are assisted with information literacy instruction and in locating information to enhance their learning skills as related to course requirements, instruction and life-long learning. The Public Services Librarian also assumes major responsibility for supervision and implementation activities of the Public Services area of the library.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Coordinates the general operation of the public services area including scheduling, record keeping, assessment of outcomes, supervision and training of student workers

Provides leadership and creative vision for the implementation of a comprehensive and effective public services programming which includes the integration of technology into the service delivery area

Maintains the print collection (books and periodicals) in an orderly manner that provides access; aids patrons in selection of relevant sources

Provides monthly displays of materials to generate interest in learning and the learning process

Manages print and electronic state adopted curriculum textbooks and teachers guides

Consults with faculty members in the Teacher Education program on resource selection for state- adopted textbooks for the curriculum collection

Assists in collection development

Guides and assists users in bibliographic and electronic information resource searching

Maintains up to date online resources, including the creation and maintenance of LibGuides

Markets the library through social media, flyers, and library website

Provides information literacy instruction (i.e., electronic database searching), tours, or lectures for classes when scheduled

Serves on the Public Services desk providing reference

Administers Chat reference

Submits periodic reports to the Director of Library and Media Services

Helps to develop, implement and evaluate library policies and procedures as needed in collaboration with the library staff and Director of Library and Media Services

Works with the Director of Library and Media Services and other library staff members in planning and implementing library enhancements for improved quality service

Participates in continuing education opportunities

Occasional evening and weekend hours may be necessary to accommodate institutional events and needs

Undertakes other duties as assigned by the Director for continued, effective, and quality service

SUPERVISION

This position reports to the Director of Library and Media Services.

QUALIFICATIONS/KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED

Masters degree in Library Science or Information Science from an ALA accredited library school; experience in public services in an academic library preferred

Knowledge of online systems and developing technologies is essential

Ability to assist patrons in the use of electronic information resources to locate information

Ability to guide and assist users in bibliographic and online searches

Knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Word, and Access

Ability to communicate and work effectively with students, faculty and staff from diverse multi-cultural socio-economic populations in public settings

Ability to work productively in a team environment with information technology and library personnel

Ability to utilize social media
