As a sworn revenue law enforcement officer, the Motor Fuels Tax Investigator is responsible for ensuring compliance with motor fuels tax law. Investigators conduct inspections through the fuel distribution system including retail service stations, fuel terminals, and the trucking industry. Investigators are responsible for detecting fuel tax evasion and conduct investigations. Investigators are expected to conduct undercover surveillance of persons and places engaged in motor fuels tax evasion schemes. Occasional overnight travel is required.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies
• Demonstrates understanding legal enforcement methods.
• Possess proficiency in public interaction including the ability to clearly convey concepts and ideas in written, verbal and other non-verbal communication forms, public speaking and conducting in-depth interviews.
• Able to conform to changes in priorities, policy and/or procedure.
• Certification by North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission as a Law Enforcement Officer.
• Bachelors' degree from an accredited college, and one year of law enforcement or investigative experience.
Management Preferences:
• Law enforcement experience
• Working knowledge of MS Word and Excel. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Bachelors degree from an accredited college or university; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience. Note: Selected candidate must be qualified for certification as a law enforcement officer in accordance with the provisions of the NC Criminal Justice Training and Standards Commission or the ability to achieve certification within one year of employment

'Tax compliance' is defined as having filed and paid all North Carolina state taxes owedeach year leading up to the current calendar year or currently in a non-delinquent payment status with the State of North Carolina on taxes that are currently owed to the State.
