Perform material handling tasks; assist other production personnel to perform line change over and maintain plant housekeeping.
A Production Assistant regularly performs duties in the production area, an industrial environment that requires use of personal protective equipment including safety glasses, hearing protection, hard hat, steel toed shoes, work gloves, protective sleeves and/or clothing, respiratory protection, and other specialized protective equipment all as directed by the Company's operating procedures, safety procedures, and other instructions provided by management. The production environment includes equipment operating at very high temperatures, often resulting in temperatures inside the production area that are higher than ambient temperatures. The employee will be exposed to moving mechanical parts, sharp equipment components and tools, hot surfaces, hot plastic, hot water, wet or slippery floor conditions, airborne dust and particles, and outdoor weather conditions. The employee will work in high places using fall arrest equipment.
Typical current work schedule includes 8 hours per day, 40 hours per week (overtime is required according to production demand). Alternative work schedule which may be adopted in the future includes 12 hours per day, with alternating 36/48 hours per week (overtime is required according to production demand). Rotating shift work required. Work instructions are provided in written form or spoken in English.
Essential Functions and Requirements:
Regular tasks include but are not limited to: verifying ingredients, refilling hoppers, weighing materials, and labeling containers, all according to documented procedures and instructions provided by management; properly documenting and evaluating these material handling activities according to established procedures and other instructions provided by management; communicating any deficiencies to management; assisting management with problem resolution related to material handling activities and documenting any resulting actions; maintaining housekeeping of the production area; and performing other tasks directed by management. Material handling tasks include but are not limited to: frequently using a forklift, pallet jack or similar device to transport materials and other items; using pneumatic transfer equipment, piping and hoses to transport materials from/to silos and railcars according to documented procedures and other instructions provided by management; regularly verifying and maintaining proper connections of transfer piping and hoses according to criteria provided by management; sampling and/or visually inspecting materials stored in packages, railcars and silos as directed by management; manually transferring material using a bucket or similar device; assembling, filling, and/or disassembling of packages.
Shift and line changeover, housekeeping and other general tasks include but are not limited to: disassembling, cleaning, inspecting, and reassembling equipment according to documented procedures and other instructions provided by management; repackaging, sealing and labeling of ingredient containers as needed; general organization and cleanup of work areas. The following physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential job functions listed above. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to stand; use hands & fingers to handle and feel objects, tools, and controls; reach repetitively with arms & hands; talk; and hear.
The employee is required to walk, sit, climb, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl and stoop. The employee will frequently lift items up to 55 pounds from floor level to above shoulder height and use devices that require a pushing or pulling force up to 120 pounds. The employee will climb ladders and perform tasks at heights greater than 6 feet and stand on concrete floor or platform regularly throughout a 12 hour shift. Specific vision abilities required in this job include color perception, close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and the ability to adjust focus. Employee must also have a satisfactory attendance record and be responsible for the safe operation of all equipment and materials.
Maintain awareness of and perform tasks in compliance with all internal policies, procedures and practices, as described in the Employee Handbook, all Safety Manuals, all Quality System Procedures, and other instructions provided by management, as well as applicable OSHA regulations. Identify, troubleshoot and report the following to management: equipment defects or malfunctions; out of spec material or contamination; safety issues or incidents. Initiating actions up to and including equipment shutdown, to mitigate a safety, environmental, and/or product quality incident. Effective verbal communication with co-workers and management is required. Certain reports and other communication will be required in writing.
High School diploma or GED equivalent; produce acceptable scores on the following ACT WorkKeys tests: Applied Mathematics, Locating Information and Reading for Information. Preferred candidates should have prior work history in a manufacturing environment and have strong mechanical aptitude.
Position is eligible for Chemtrusion's certification program. With appropriate tenure, training, and available openings, may advance to Production Operator, Blender, Lab Technician and/or a material handling position.
